More Budapest

I'm really glad that we have free internet in the hotel. However, it is really, really slow. It takes me like 30 minutes to upload pictures.

We are 10 days in Budapest so we have had a lot of time to see everything. We are part of a festival but part of the festival got cancelled due to funds so we have to fill a lot of time. We have seen a ton.

One day, the students went to the House of Terror, which is a somewhat of a Holocaust museum and Mark and I went last time we were in Budapest. So we decided to go to the Szechenyi Bath. Hungary is famous for their natural spring baths. The Szechenyi is in this huge, gorgeous building and there are just rooms and rooms of hot pools with different minerals and such in them. Really they were all the same to me but I guess each one had different things in them. Sulfur, salt, medicine. They also had saunas and steam rooms and an outdoor pool. It was so relaxing after walking and walking. Lots of men in Speedos though.

As a group we went up to Fisherman's Bastian and the Palace. All things we had seen last time we were here. So Mark and I went exploring a little after. We wanted to go into the Labyrinth underneath the castle but didn't have time. Apparently there is a maze of underground tunnels underneath that is haunted. Maybe next time we're here.

Overlooking the Danube and the Pest side of Budapest from the top of Fisherman's Bastian.

Mark in front of the remnant of the church of Mary Magdalene. We found this as we exploring.

Folk Dance Tour 2011

Mark and I are again touring with the folk dancers to Europe. Prior to leaving we took our kids to Disneyland, which I'll post about later. Our first few days have been eventful. I already have blisters on my feet from walking so much. Our plane rideover was horrible. We flew DC to Vienna and Mark and I had the noisiest family behind us. Most of the time, their two young daughters kicked our seats. We didn't go to bed the night before the trip because we had to leave at 4 a.m. so we were so tired and I couldn't sleep. Needless to say, I got about 4 hours sleep in 48 hours.

Our first full day here the group went and saw a few things in Budapest including the parliament and St. Stevens church. Mark and I were here three years ago so a lot of it we have seen before. But it's such a beautiful city, we don't mind touring it again.

Me in front of the Parliament building. This picture doesn't do it justice. It is so enormous and detailed.

The whole group in front of St. Steven's church.

We then were met by the missionaries and headed over to the church to do an interactive activity with the young single adults and other church members. We met a lot of nice senior missionary couples and the mission president as well as many nice members. The church is quite strong in Hungary. It has the first stake in eastern Europe with a large stake center. The largest church building I've seen here.

Some of the kids, and Ed our director, teaching the members to dance.

A local news station is making a documentary on religious groups and is showcasing our church and how their youth are a positive influence in their country. So they filmed us and the members interacting.

The next day we went to church in that same building. It's always a testimony builder to here the members share their experiences and testimonies. Especially in countries like these where everybody is a convert. After church we went to a town near Budapest called Szentendre. It's a very touristy town, with many shops and beautiful walking streets right on the Danube. Andrea, our tour guide says it's where all the rich people are moving because it's the popular place to live.

All the tour leaders. Ron, the team trainer and his wife Leslie, Jonathan our tour manager, Ed and Vicki Austin, directors, and me and Mark.

For lunch in Szentendre, they took us to a restaurant that had this cool tunnel system that was the wine cellar. In part of it, they made an eating area and we ate down there.

After that, we went to Budakalsz, another nearby city, and did a short show at their folk dance festival there. I think at first people don't know what to think about American Folk Dance. It's so much different then their traditional Hungarian dances. But they enjoy it. Some people even show up in their wranglers and cowboy hats.

Today we went to the Fisherman's bastian and palace and had another show. More on that later.

Dancing

Clara has had so much fun dancing with the BYU Children's dance this year. Her class did a medley from Annie. They perform in the dejong Concert hall at BYU and she thinks that is the best thing ever. She gets to have long tech rehearsals and play games int he green room.

I asked her if she wanted to do it again next year and the answer was a definite yes. I told her she could pick something else, and that she might try clogging since her dream is to be a folk dancer. That is a good skill for a folk dancer. She told me that she might try clogging sometime, just not now. She said that with clogging you just stand in one spot and don't do anything with your arms. I beg to differ but she said that she can't be boxed in like that. Her dancing has to be free. Whatever that means.

Speaking of clogging. Our team competed at Nationals at Lagoon again this year. We use it as an excuse to spend the day at Lagoon with my family. My parents and Amanda and Anna, and Melissa and her family came down. It's always a fun day. Our team did awesome too. We have the highest average age of all the teams there (Our oldest dancer is 38) and both our dances placed high enough to get a trophy in our division. One of them placed in the top 5 out of 90+ teams. The other was in the top 15. Eat that, 12 year old cloggers!

It was Collin's Birthday....2 months ago

Oh my gosh, I can't believe how unbelievably busy we have been. Collin's birthday was two months ago and still have not posted about it. I wanted to get it up before we leave. We leave in 5 days to take the kids to L.A. to my brother in law and sister in law's house. They are staying there while Mark and I go on tour with the folk dancers. Hopefully I'll get to blog while I'm there. And hopefully everybody survives while we're gone. My sister in law will have 6 kids. Good luck with that.

Anywho, back to Collin's birthday.

Hiding before the party.

Collin wavered back and forth on what theme to have for his party. A couple of weeks before he settled on Pirates so I started planning. Of course he changed his mind. The only way we convinced him that Pirates was a good theme was to tell him that Stella, my sister in laws dog, would come dressed as a pirate. It worked. Phew. Clara and Collin all dressed up for the party.

Stella. Collin didn't know quite what to think.

The cake. You know me and my lack of cake decorating ability.

We decided to do a pinata. It was the pull string kind, since it was predicted to be cold. We didn't want to be outside. Problem is, Bronson my nephew, pulled out the magic string that was supposed to open the hatch. He tugged too hard and the string came off but didn't break the pinata.
So we resorted to taking it outside and beating it with a stick. We tried hanging it off the tree but one of them hit it too hard and broke the cord that it was hanging from. So then we just beat it on the ground. Eventually it opened. Note to self: buy a better pinata next time.

I love this picture of him blowing out the candles. So enthusiastic.

So Collin has a blue Lovey that he's had since he was 3-4 months old. We were smart after Clara and her one dog. We have 3 loveys that we rotate through. When we first bought the Loveys, they had a rattle in the head. So we pulled out the inside and cut out the rattle. Collin never noticed until recently. The loveys are getting old and the stuffing is starting to come out the hole where we cut. When he discovered it, he thought it was really fun to pull out the stuffing. We were finding stuffing everywhere. He also likes to sniff the lovey when he sucks his thumb. Once the stuffing started coming out he started sniffing that instead. We would catch him with a small piece of stuffing stuck practically up his nose. We had to keep refilling the stuffing, which Collin calls Lovey fluffies. And the stuffing had to be just the right consistency. Not too soft or too hard. Soon after that he decided that he didn't like the stuffing at all and pulled all of it out of all the loveys. Now they all have flat, stuffless heads. He likes to thread his finger through the hole where the stuffing came out. Kids are so silly.

Another Catch up

We have been so incredibly busy, I'm sorry to say that the blog has been neglected. Between school and work and family time, there is barely any time to spare. So here is an update on us:

Collin had his 4th birthday (another post with pictures). I don't know what it is with my kids. They don't go through the terrible 2's or even 3's but toward end of year three and into year 4, it's like a little demon enters their body. Clara did the same thing. Collin is in the tantrum phase. He definitely wants things the way he wants them. He wants to pick out his own clothes and shoes. That usually involves the same color pants and shirts. He got mad the other day that he didn't have yellow pants to match his yellow shirt. He changes his mind...a lot. A normal morning involves him picking something for breakfast, and then as soon as we make it, he changes his mind. And then throws a fit. The other day he cried and cried for about an hour because I put in his Capri sun straw in the kitchen and not at the table where he wanted me to do it. Really? But we love him and he still can be super sweet if he wants to be. He loves rockets still, and super heroes. He's loving that it is getting warm because he can play outside all the time. He loves to ride his bike and play in the sand box.

Clara is still enjoying school. They only have a little over a month until the end. Crazy! We are so proud of her and how well she is doing. Last month we found out that she got into the CAS program (Center for Accelerated Studies) which is the gifted and talented program in our school district. They only have one 4th grade class for the whole district which is about 12 schools. She is super excited to go there because they have a guinea pig in their classroom, they get to plant a garden, and go on science based field trips. She is also still enjoying piano and dance. They have their big dance concert next month and they get to do a dance from the musical Annie.

I am still enjoying work at BYU. Right now I am designing the Diary of Anne Frank. Depressing. And at the same time designing Annie for a local theater. Two different extremes. I also love dancing with my clogging team (pictured below) Mark likes to call us the fat girl cloggers. Thanks. There are 20 of us between the ages of 20 and 40. We perform and compete and just have a good time. In March we competed in St. George and then next month we have the competition at Lagoon.

Mark is busy getting ready for tour to Easter Europe. We leave the middle of June with the Folk Dancers. I actually get to go this year. Yay! He has been doing a lot of touring with work this semester. He is getting our garden ready and fruit trees pruned. We are so excited for spring here.

Last month we got to meet him in St. George for one of the folk dance performances. While he was working, the kids and I went on a little hike near St. George to see the petroglyphs. Collin is not a great hiker yet. I ended up carrying him a lot of the way. It really wasn't a long hike, but Clara complained a lot that she was tired. Apparently we need to go hiking more. We did get lost on the way which extended the hike a little. Clara likes to brag that she knew the right path and I took the wrong one even though she tried to tell me the right way to go. I didn't listen to her so we ended up off course. But the destination was definitely worth it. We saw a lot of petroglyphs.

Catch up

Seeing how it's been almost 3 months since I last posted, I figured I should do a little catch up.
In November, Collin broke his foot. He was jumping off of the babysitters trampoline, which he had done a hundred times, and landed wrong on his foot. At first he just complained that his foot hurt but continued to run around. Later he complained again but the babysitter couldn't find anything wrong. By the time I got there to pick Collin up, he wouldn't put any weight on it. I took off his shoe and it began to swell. We called the doctor and he looked at him but didn't seem overly concerned because it didn't show signs of being broken. He ordered an x-ray anyway. Collin had fractured 4 out of 5 metatarsals. They couldn't cast it right away so they put a temporary splint and then a cast on it. At first he couldn't walk on it so we had to carry him everywhere or he could crawl. But after about 2 weeks, he could walk on it and he got around quite nicely. After 4 weeks, they took it off and his foot had heeled just fine.

For Thanksgiving we went to Las Vegas to have dinner at Mark's parent's Vegas house. Everybody came down except Matt. Mark's parents were nice enough to get a couple of hotel rooms which we took advantage of. The house there is big but a little squishy with 25 people. Me and a lot of people in a small place for a lengthy amount of time do not mix. But we had an enjoyable time with cousins and somehow pulled off a complete dinner cooked in a small kitchen.

Clara had her piano concert in December. She is doing so well with the piano. She loves practicing (most of the time) and even sits down and transposes her songs into another key. The other day she was trying to play the bass clef with her right hand and the treble clef with her left hand. At the same time. Just to see if she could.

We had a wonderful Christmas. We had Christmas eve at Mark's parent's where we reenacted the Nativity. My nieces, Annika and Marissa, organized it all and it was fun to watch. Clara got to play Mary. Collin did not participate although I think he was supposed to be a sheep.
Christmas day we drove up to Idaho and had a nice weekend with my family. Melissa did not come because she had just had her new baby, Joe. But Amanda and Alison were there and we spent time with my cousins.

So that was pretty much the holidays for us. Mark is busy this semester, gone almost every weekend with one of the dance groups. I am still working part time and enjoy teaching the lighting 1 class this semester. I am also designing the Diary of Anne Frank which goes up in May. I also got put into Cub Scouts in my ward. I know. But I am the pack committee chair and also a den leader so I've spent the last couple of months learning everything there is to know about cub scouts. It's exhausting. But I'll totally be ready for when Collin is 8.

Collin is potty trained!

Finally.....
Seeing how Collin is almost 4 we figured that we should maybe get him potty trained. He's been very resistant so we had been scared to make him do it. We decided that he was old enough that it was getting a little ridiculous that he was still in diapers. So one weekend we went all or nothing. We read the train your toddler in 3 days info and threw away all the diapers. The first day he had about 5 accidents before he really went in the toilet. After he figured it out, there was no looking back. He has really only had 1 pee accident and a couple of poop accidents. The pooping thing is a little more complicated but we're working on it. It's been about 3 weeks and he's doing great! We told him that if he filled up his sticker chart we would take him to Pirate Island Pizza. He filled it up in about 4 days since he pretty much went every time in the toilet. So a couple of Saturday's ago we took him to the pizza place.
The Monday following the weekend that we potty trained him we went to Heber City to see an ice display. He complained that he had to pee but there were no bathrooms in sight. It was dark so Mark took him over next to the car and had him pee on the tire. Mark told him that it's okay to pee outside in the snow. Today we arrived home after getting Clara from a party and Collin had to go to the bathroom. I thought he was behind me as I came in and put the coats away and took off my shoes. He wasn't. I turned around and he is in the front yard for all to see with his pants down around his ankles peeing in a snowdrift. But daddy said he could pee in the snow, he argued. Great, thanks Mark.
